HEALTH EDUCATION ACADEMIC WORK

Team No Sleep

Health Behavior Change Paper

The goal of this project was to track an unhealthy behavior and use health behavior change models to correct the "bad" habit. I chose to track my inconsistent sleep schedule and used strategies such as drinking less caffeine, implementing breathing exercises, and putting my cell phone away early to ensure a healthier sleep cycle. I successfully implemented a more consistent sleep schedule upon completion. Viewing health education from the role of a patient/client, I gained a better understanding of the perspective my own patients may hold.

Project #1

Reducing Food Insecurity

Persuasive Public Speech

The goal of this project was to prepare and present an eight-minute persuasive speech on a science issue of our choosing and effectively persuade our audience to take specific action on the issue. I chose to tackle the issue of food insecurity. If someone is food insecure it means they lack access to adequate nutritional food due to limited money and/or resources. My project involved a specific focus on its prevalence across college campuses. I used statistics, real-life examples, and ethos to appeal to my class members. I used a call to action to inspire my classmates to volunteer in our community to fight food insecurity.

This project involved creating a cohesive logic model that described the necessary inputs, outputs, and projected outcomes of a successful planned program. After assessing primary demographic information within the local community, I chose to aim my program toward reducing food insecurity among college students in Alachua County. This project helped me understand the process involved in executing a health education program.

Project #3

Let's Have a Heart-to-Heart

Educational Presentation & Lesson Plan

This specific project involved creating a lesson plan and an associated teaching presentation on any health topic of choice. We worked in teams of four, and our chosen topic was cardiovascular disease within a priority population of African American women. I contributed greatly to the group in terms of presentation design, creative engagement ideas, and lesson plan content. We presented our lesson/educational lecture to a virtual audience. We evaluated our performance using post-presentation surveys and learned that our audience felt that they had benefitted from attending our lesson.
