EQUAL ACCESS CLINIC

CLINICAL VOLUNTEER

I was a clinical volunteer with the Equal Access Clinic since the summer of 2019. The Equal Access Clinic is a network of student-run free clinics that strives to provide quality comprehensive healthcare for all. The vision is to improve the physical, mental, and social well-being of all, by enhancing access to high-quality, comprehensive, patient-centered care and by facilitating community-level action. I love getting to do my part to help patients get the care they deserve. This volunteer experience solidified my passion to pursue a career in medicine.

MOBILE OUTREACH CLINIC

CARE COORDINATOR

I was a care coordinator with the Mobile Outreach Clinic beginning in the summer of 2019. The Mobile Outreach Clinic aims to create environments that provide an immersive educational experience focused on the social determinants of health and their impact on patients' health and well-being. The Mobile Outreach Clinic was unique in that, we took the care to the patients via a large bus fully staffed with healthcare providers and volunteers. This experience was integral in teaching me the importance of reducing patient's barriers to accessing quality healthcare.

Spring 2020 Health Career Convention

I served as a committee director my senior year for the Futures in Health Professions committee (FIHP) within UF’s chapter of the Premedical American Medical Student Association (AMSA). UFL Pre-Med American Medical Student Association is the University of Florida's largest, student-governed, pre-medical and pre-health club. As the largest chapter of the American Medical Student Association, UFL AMSA fosters a community of students committed to improving medical training and the nation’s health. FIHP is responsible for hosting one of AMSA’s largest keystone events, the annual Health Career Convention (HCC). This event allows Florida high school students interested in the healthcare field to visit UF and gain hands-on experience from professionals spanning different disciplines. As one of the co-directors for this committee, I led a team in charge of planning and hosting HCC. We had over 200 participants and the feedback was very encouraging, as many students expressed their excitement toward pursuing healthcare in college.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM

SITE LEADER

One of my favorite extracurricular experiences thus far has been my time volunteering with the School Health Interdisciplinary Program (SHIP) here at UF. The School Health Interdisciplinary Program contributes to optimal health and academic outcomes for elementary-aged youth by developing, implementing, and evaluating effective school health curriculum. Volunteers are involved in teaching and mentoring elementary school students, motivating students to engage in health promoting behaviors, and facilitating academic success.  The curriculum covers several critical health topics, including self-esteem, stress management, bullying prevention, drug use prevention, injury prevention, nutrition, and physical activity. Through this program I combined my passion for introducing health education at an early age with my desire to work with pediatric populations. After participating in SHIP for some time I was given the role of site leader wherein I facilitated weekly lessons with elementary school students in the local community.

GATOR ADAA

BOLLYWOOD FUSION DANCE TEAM

TEAM CAPTAIN

When I came to college, I knew that I wanted to engage in activities that sparked my creative interest and held meaning to me beyond academics. Thus, I became involved with Gator Adaa, a nationally competitive Bollywood Fusion dance team. The purpose of Adaa is to display Indian culture through a fusion of Bollywood, contemporary, and classical dancing.  I was on the team for all four years of college. I became more involved each year serving as team manager my junior year and dance captain my senior year. Outside of exploring our creativity and dancing together, Adaa maintained a support system that transcended the base expectations of the team. As captain I increased my communication and leadership skills to work successfully within a large team setting.
